What Does “AI Agent” Really Mean?

Artificial intelligence seems to have developed a language of its own.

Large language models. Generative AI. Machine learning. Copilots.

Now, one of the newest terms gaining attention is AI agent.

Unfortunately, many people hear the word agent and assume it is simply another name for a chatbot.

It is not.

An AI agent is much more than a tool that answers questions. It can be thought of as a digital team member that performs a series of tasks toward a specific goal while operating within established rules, controls, and human oversight.

Instead of waiting for a user to ask one question at a time, an AI agent can gather information, evaluate options, complete multiple steps, and report back with recommendations or finished work.

The most important distinction is this:

AI generates information. AI agents perform work.

That does not mean AI agents replace people. It means they can help people work more efficiently, consistently, and strategically.

Is the information complete?

Is required documentation missing?

Does the material meet predefined criteria?

Are there indicators that additional review may be necessary?

Rather than relying on assumptions, an AI agent can measure information against established standards, policies, rules, or decision frameworks.

One concern I hear frequently is:

“Will AI agents replace my job?”

I believe that is the wrong question. The greater opportunity is to use AI agents to extend the reach of experienced professionals. Imagine if an organization’s most knowledgeable compliance officer, auditor, coder, investigator, or operations leader could make decades of experience available to every employee. AI agents can help make that possible. They can capture institutional knowledge, organize information, reinforce established processes, and make relevant guidance available when it is needed. Human judgment, however, remains essential. The AI agent can perform repetitive and time-consuming work. People must continue to provide experience, context, ethical reasoning, professional skepticism, and final decision-making.

Governance Matters More Than Ever

As AI agents become more capable, organizations must ensure that they operate responsibly.

Effective implementation requires more than purchasing new technology. It requires a strong governance foundation that includes:
